I prefer the expressive power of ‘the sketch’, tempered by creative labour to arrive at a successful picture. I typically don’t have a slow, studied approach to making art — more the physical act of drawing and painting as an essential part of a realized piece.
I enjoy watercolour painting ‘en plein air’ and reckon the attraction lies in its simplicity and immediacy. At the same time, working in the studio on larger mixed-media drawings and paintings with more figurative subjects has an equivalent appeal – the combination of different materials prompts alternate responses that in turn provide unexpected outcomes.
